President Petro Poroshenko held a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi, July 12, during which he expressed his expectation of support from the European Union.
“In Ukraine today the question of peace and security is being decided not only for (Ukraine), but for Europe as well,” Poroshenko said, adding that he hoped the current Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will lead to a position of solidarity with Ukraine on the part of the EU countries for the joint development of peace, freedom, and democracy. The president pointed out that this type of solidarity can be demonstrated at the next European Council meeting on July 16 (where sanctions against Russia will be discussed again — Ed.).
During the conversation, Matteo Renzi assured Petro Poroshenko that he can count on the support of Italy and Europe in his efforts to stabilize and de-escalate the situation in the Donbas, reports the president’s website.
Additionally, Prime Minister Renzi invited President Poroshenko to visit Italy at a convenient time. Poroshenko thanked him for the invitation and said the Italian prime minister is an expected guest in Ukraine.
